EXCUSES, EXCUSES – WHY PEOPLE ARE RELUCTANT TO HAVE A WILL

April 25, 2025 - Nicholas John

In my many years as a Solicitor/Will Writer I have heard many excuses from clients as to why they either don’t have a Will in place or why they are so reluctant to do one.
Here’s my top 5:
Excuse 1: “I don’t have anything to leave to anyone.”
ST10 LAW’s response: “just because you may not have anything now does not mean that that will always be the case. You can execute a Will as a pauper and die a billionaire (and vice versa, to be fair!)”
Excuse 2: “I’m a superstitious type. If I do a Will, I’ll die soon after.”
ST10 LAW’s response: “you may indeed die soon after doing a Will. However, “executing a Will” has never appeared as a cause of death on a death certificate!”
Excuse 3: “Wills are complicated; I don’t understand all the legal jargon.”
ST10 LAW’s response: “not when I do them for you. By the time I’ve finished with you, you’ll be able to explain all the terminology to all your friends and family like a pro. Hey, maybe I could set you up for a career in Will writing!”
Excuse 4: “Wills are expensive.”
ST10 LAW’s response: “hah, not when I do them. Most of my Wills are done for clients via the Cancer Research UK Will Writing Scheme which means that clients do not pay me anything to deal with their Wills; Cancer Research UK does, hopefully in return for a gift in the Will(s).”
Excuse 5: “I don’t need to do a Will. If I die, then everything will automatically go to the right people.”
ST10 LAW’s response: “bad assumption to make. Dying Intestate (without a Will) is not an option. The only way you can ensure that the right people benefit from your Estate when you die is by having a Will in place.”
What’s your excuse?🤔🤔 Why not e-mail me and let me know?
