THE IMPORTANCE OF HAVING A “DEATH FILE”
Another morbid (but important) Public Service Announcement from ST10 LAW HQ…
A Death File (sometimes called an “In Case of Death” file) is a crucial document that helps your loved ones handle your affairs smoothly when you pass away.
Here’s what you should include:

• Full name, date of birth, and National Insurance number
• Passport & driving license copies
• Birth & marriage certificates (if applicable)
• Copies of any name change documents
2. Legal Documents
• Will – A copy of the most recent signed version – the original should always be kept in a safe place (preferably at the Probate Registry) and ideally registered with the National Will Register
• Letter of Wishes – Explaining any personal matters not in the will
• Funeral Plans – Any prepaid funeral arrangements or wishes
• Property Deeds or Rental Agreements
• Prenuptial or Divorce Settlements
3. Financial Information
• Bank account details (sort code & account numbers)
• Investment & pension details
• Life insurance policies
• Mortgage & loan documents
• Details of any debts or credit agreements
4. Digital & Online Accounts
• A list of online accounts (email, social media, banking, subscriptions)
• Instructions on how to access them (stored securely or via a password manager)
• Details of cryptocurrency wallets, if applicable
5. Contact List
• Executor of your will
• Solicitor handling your estate
• Financial adviser or accountant
• Close family members and key friends
6. End-of-Life Wishes
• Burial or cremation preferences
• Organ donation instructions
• Preferred songs, readings, or special requests for the funeral
7. Business Information (If Applicable)
• Business ownership documents
• Successor or transition plans
• Access to business bank accounts and key contacts
8. Safe Deposit Box or Safe Access
• Location of any safe or deposit box
• Instructions on how to access them (keys, codes, or necessary authorisations)
In my precedents file I have a physical assets log and a digital assets log which clients can make use of to include in their death file. If anyone would like copies, then please e-mail me at nick@st10law.co.uk. There will be no charge.
